How to Disable Tax for a Customer or Business

This article will explain how to remove taxes for all items that a specific customer will buy from your store. The Promotions function allows for the removal of taxes for customers. This method allows you to remove taxes from all items a customer will purchase without having to manually remove the tax from each item each time the customer comes in.

To get started, log into your Bottle POS Admin. Then, on the left-hand side of your screen, click on the Items tab. In the Items menu, click the first option, also named Items.

 

Removing Taxes from Items for Specific Customers or Businesses

On the Items page, click the Manage Promotions button in the upper right.

Create a new promotion that will remove tax for the customer. To do that, click the Add button at the top right, the Add Promotion window to pop up.

  1. Enter the name you want into the Promotion Name box. Something like 'Remove Customer Tax' is recommended for your easy future reference.
  2. Choose %Y Off X Qty from the Promotion Type drop-list.
  3. Click the Add button on the bottom right to populate the Bulk Sale line item for the promotion.
  4. Enter 1 as the Quantity.
  5. Enter 0 as the Enter Percentage Off Number.
    Please Note: There must be a promotion applied for the tax to be removed, so the solution is to create a promotion that applies a 0% discount.
  6. Choose the No Tax option from the drop-list for the Customer Tax. Don't Save the new promotion just yet, we have one more area to work in first.

Next, add the customer to the Promotion so they will be tax-exempt moving forward:

  • Click on the Customers tab in the Add Promotion window.
  • Enter the customer name or their mobile number into the Customers Search bar.
  • Matches will display in a popup list. Click on the customer to add them to the promotion.
  • Click the Save button at the bottom. Your customer will now be tax exempt.

 

Use the Tax-Exempt Promotion in the Register

Here is how the Tax-Exemption Promotion will work for you in the Register:.

  • Click in the Customer Mobile box on the lower left side of the screen.
  • Enter the customer phone number into the box.
  • Click the appropriate match to open the Customer Info window. You won't see anything about the Tax-Exempt Promotion in the window, but if you found the correct customer, it will be active.
  • Click OK. Items you add to the transaction will not charge tax, regardless of how they are set for Default Tax.
